Al Joumhouri (الحزب الجمهوري - Republican Party) was established on 9 April
2012 as the merger of different centrist and social-liberal parties. Following
the withdrawal of some of its significant components, for instance, Afek Tounes
in August 2013, Al Joumhouri appears as the continuation of the Parti
démocratique progressiste (PDP), which was under the Ben Ali rule one of the few
opposition movements not "institutionalized" (that is, not funded by the
regime).
In the 2014 presidential election, the party's candidate, Ahmed
Néjib Chebbi, was the 7th most voted candidate (34,025 votes; 1.04%). In the
general election that followed, the party obtained 49,965 votes (1.47%),
securing 1 seat (out of 217) at the Assembly of the People's Representatives.
